Arthur Kirkland (Al Pacino) is an honest, hard-working, Baltimore defense attorney who truly believes in doing his best for his clients and in the system of justice. Problem is, no one seems to share his idealism. While a public relations driven corruption probe has the city’s legal system on edge, Arthur is busy trying to juggle his eclectic client list and get an innocent man released from prison who’s been locked up on a technicality by ego maniacal Judge Henry T. Fleming (John Forsythe), a judge Arthur has butted heads with in the past. But now, Fleming is being accused of rape and is blackmailing Arthur into defending him. Arthur discovers his best friend and fellow attorney, Jay Porter (Jeffrey Tambor), to be of no help, being on the verge of his own nervous breakdown, and so seeks advice from easy-going Judge Francis Rayford (Jack Warden), only to find that the judge is a little more loose than anyone could have guessed. New girlfriend, Gail Packer (Christine Lahti) won’t be able to offer much consolation either, having her hands full as one of the investigators probing the courthouse corruption. Just another day in the justice system.
