Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider) is a veteran theater director and choreographer on Broadway. Years of stress have taken their toll on his health. He is a chain smoker who drinks too much and sleeps with all of his dancers. He imagines flirting with the angel of death, a woman named Angelique (Jessica Lange). Gideon lands in the hospital with chest pains and needs open heart surgery. The backers of his current show realize the best way they can make money out of the situation is to bet on his death. Gideon is at the point where he needs to face his death and accept it.
