Young, cold and calculating newlywed Severine (Catherine Deneuve) is bored with her life. While she has everything she has ever wanted, a handsome husband (Jean Sorel) who makes a great deal of money for them as a doctor, a quaint house, and good friends she looks for something else in her life. As she oozes sexuality and is constantly seductive in nature, she decides to spend her days working as a hooker. She does so to fulfill her great need for sex, which is a constant necessity for her since puberty. She begins to sell her body and finds great satisfaction in it, but there is one problem, she can no longer have sex with her husband as she is not attracted to him anymore.
