Charles (Hugh Grant) and his group of friends are all happily attending to life and love and several different weddings. When Charles meets Carrie (Andie MacDowell) he is taken with her and meets her several times over the course of the four weddings and one funeral in which all of the friends partake. The first time they meet they have a fling, which Carrie considers a one night stand, but not so for Charles. However when they meet again the second time it is worse for him as he finds Carrie engaged to a wealthy Scotsman. At the third wedding, which is Carrie's, all of the friends are saddened by the death of their friend Gareth (Simon Callow), from which ensues the funeral. The last wedding that they all attend is that of Charles, but he is still smitten by Carrie and the question remains as to whom he will marry?
