Young Victor Gettes (Campbell Scott) is wealthy and intelligent. He is also suffering from leukemia. As his illness worsens, he is forced to undergo a serious course of chemotherapy. Victor hires the outgoing yet cautious Hilary O’Neil (Julia Roberts) to work as his live-in caretaker. At first, she is a little scared of the reality of his terminal illness, but the two become closer and fall in love. They struggle to overcome the gap in class and intellect, and find intimacy on a deeper level. Together, they learn and grow, through sickness and health, with the reality of love and life.
